There are three common reasons for why the VAT number you are trying to provide is not accepted.
- The VAT number was typed incorrectly
- The database which validates the VAT number is not responding due to high volume of validation requests, or
- the VAT number is not activated for international trade.
You can check your VAT number’s validity at http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/vies/ to see if the VAT number is incorrect or if the database is temporarily down. If the database is down, you need to wait until the database is working again to add or update an address including your VAT number.
If you suspect that your VAT number is not activated for international trade, you need to contact your country’s tax officials so it will be activated and can be used.
